Choosing the Right Subfloor for Synthetic Sports Flooring
You’ve decided to install synthetic sports flooring. Great choice! But here’s the thing most people miss: the surface you lay it on matters just as much as the flooring itself. That hidden layer underneath? That’s your subfloor. Get it right, and your court will last for decades. Get it wrong, and even the best flooring will fail.
What Is a Subfloor?
The synthetic flooring is what you see and play on. The subfloor is what holds it all together from below.
Without a solid subfloor, even premium synthetic surfaces will bubble, lift at the edges, and wear out fast, putting players at risk of injury.
Why It Matters
A bad subfloor means uneven surfaces, poor ball bounce, and flooring that cracks or peels within months. A good subfloor gives you consistent traction, proper shock absorption, and a court that stays in shape for years.
This is why Dayal Sports gives equal attention to both the surface and the base on every project.
The 5 Main Subfloor Types
1. Concrete: The Most Common Base
Strong, flat, and affordable. Concrete is the default choice for most indoor sports courts in India.
Best for: Badminton, basketball, multipurpose halls
Must be smooth, level, and fully cured before flooring is installed. Moisture in concrete is a serious problem. Dayal Sports treats all concrete bases with professional polishing and acid washing before laying any surface.
2. Wooden Floating Floor: Best for High-Performance Courts
A wooden subfloor has a slight spring to it, that soft, responsive feel you notice on professional courts. It absorbs impact and reduces fatigue on players’ joints.
Best for: Badminton, basketball, volleyball, table tennis
Dayal Sports’ wooden flooring systems are built to Olympic and international standards.
3. Rubber Underlayment: Great for Gyms and Schools
A rubber mat layer between the concrete and the synthetic surface adds cushioning without major cost.
Best for: Gyms, multi-use courts, school facilities
Easy to install, budget-friendly, and handles heavy foot traffic well.
4. Foam Underlayment: For Lightweight Setups
A thin foam layer works well under PVC tiles and interlocking court systems. Light cushioning, sound-dampening, and easy to swap out.
Best for: PP interlocking courts, temporary setups, playgrounds
Not suited for professional or high-load courts.
5. Asphalt: For Outdoor Courts
Asphalt holds up well against heat, rain, and temperature changes, making it the preferred outdoor base for hard acrylic courts.
Best for: Outdoor basketball, tennis, acrylic surfaces
Subfloor Quick Reference
| Sport | Best Subfloor |
| Badminton | Wooden or concrete |
| Basketball | Wooden (shock-absorbing) |
| Volleyball | Wooden or rubber |
| Futsal / Football | Concrete + PU or artificial turf |
| Athletics | Composite or polyurethane base |
| Gym | Rubber |
| Outdoor Courts | Asphalt or concrete |
Dayal Sports covers all of these, from PVC Hova Courts and PU Flooring to Athletic Tracks and Artificial Turf.
Watch Out for Moisture
Moisture trapped beneath synthetic flooring causes bubbling, warping, and peeling. It is a real problem in India’s tropical climate. Always use a vapour barrier, ensure concrete is fully dry, and build drainage into outdoor court designs. Dayal Sports uses certified, humidity-resistant materials that meet national indoor air quality standards on every project.
Indoor vs. Outdoor: Key Differences
Indoor: Prioritise shock absorption and moisture control. Wooden or rubber subfloors work best.
Outdoor: Prioritise weather resistance and drainage. Concrete or asphalt with proper sealing is the way to go.
Don’t Cut Corners on the Base
A cheap or rushed subfloor costs more in the long run. Floors fail early, replacements are expensive, and players get hurt. Getting it right the first time, with proper preparation and professional installation, is always the better investment.
