How to Plan a Multi-Sport Complex from Flooring to Infrastructure

Building a multi-sport complex is one of the most rewarding projects a school or sports organisation can take on. Done well, it becomes a space where athletes train seriously, and communities gather around sport. Done poorly, it becomes an expensive maintenance problem nobody enjoys using.

At Dayal Sports, we have worked on sports infrastructure projects across India and Asia, handling flooring, structure, lighting, and seating under one roof. If you are planning a multi-sport complex and are not sure where to begin, our experts can guide you through these key decisions.

Start with the sports, not the budget.

The first thing to figure out is which sports the facility needs to serve. That answer drives every decision that follows. A badminton hall needs different flooring, ceiling height, and lighting than a basketball court or football ground. Once you know your sports list, you can work backwards to what the facility actually needs and what it will cost.

Indoor or Outdoor: Getting the Split Right

Most multi-sport complexes work best as a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces. Badminton and table tennis need to be played indoors because wind affects play too much. Basketball and football can go either way, and outdoor courts cost far less to build. Deciding this split early helps you size the building correctly and avoid covering space that did not need covering.

Get the Foundation Right First

Every flooring system sits on a base, and a good surface on a bad foundation will not last. Common problems include uneven concrete that pools water, weak bases that crack under heavy use, and old surfaces not properly repaired before new flooring is applied. Dayal Sports always starts with a site assessment to check the flatness, drainage, and condition of the existing surface before any installation begins.

Choosing Flooring for Each Space

No single flooring works for every sport in every setting. A well-planned complex usually uses two or three different materials depending on what each space needs.

Wooden Flooring for Indoor Courts

Wooden flooring is the standard for indoor badminton, basketball, and volleyball. It gives excellent ball rebound and natural cushioning that protects players’ joints. Dayal Sports installs Olympic and international standard wooden sports floors, covering design, production, and installation from one team.

Acrylic Courts for Outdoor Spaces

For outdoor tennis, basketball, and multi-use courts, hard acrylic is one of the most reliable surfaces available. It handles all weather, holds colour for years with UV-resistant coatings, and delivers consistent ball rebound across the full playing area. The elastic variant adds rubber particle cushioning to reduce impact on players’ feet and legs.

PP Interlocking for Flexible Multi-Sport Courts

PP interlocking tiles are ideal where flexibility and fast installation matter most. Made from virgin polypropylene, they are non-toxic, anti-slip, and 100 per cent recyclable. They lie directly on any flat concrete surface without adhesive, drain rainwater immediately through the open-grid design, and can be reconfigured or relocated without any loss of performance.

PU Flooring for Running Tracks and Gym Zones

Polyurethane flooring is the right choice for athletic running tracks and indoor gym areas. Dayal’s silicone PU cushions each stride, handles heavy equipment loads without cracking, and provides a hygienic, easy-clean surface that suits both training and competition use.

Artificial Turf for Football Fields

Dayal Sports artificial turf is ISO9001 and ISO14001 certified and engineered for low deformation and long service life. It is the practical choice for football fields and outdoor recreational grounds that take heavy use throughout the year.

Structure, Lighting, and Seating

If the complex includes an indoor hall, a pre-engineered building, or PEB, it is one of the most cost-effective ways to cover large spans without internal columns. Dayal Sports designs and installs PEB structures to meet the specific height and clearance requirements of each sport hosted inside.

Lighting is equally important and often underbudgeted. Poor lighting affects player safety, hurts the experience for spectators, and can disqualify a venue from official competitions. Dayal Sports supplies anti-glare LED fixtures designed for even coverage across indoor and outdoor sports fields, planned at the same time as the building structure rather than added later.

For seating, the right choice depends on expected audience size and event type. Dayal Sports offers ergonomically engineered seating options, from simple, durable chairs for school grounds to cushioned arena-style seating for larger competition venues.

Plan in phases if the budget needs it.

Not every facility can build everything at once, and that is completely fine. A phased approach works well if the full vision is clear from the beginning. The drainage, electrical conduit, and foundation for later phases should be roughed in during phase one so future additions do not require tearing up finished work. Dayal Sports works with clients on phased plans where each phase delivers genuine usable value from day one.

One Partner for the Whole Project

The most common problem in sports infrastructure projects is having too many separate vendors who do not coordinate with each other. The flooring team finishes their work, the structural team starts theirs, and nobody checks that the anchor points, drainage, and load specs all align. Dayal Sports was founded by Dr. Yuva Dayalan, a former international badminton player, to deliver global-standard sports infrastructure with real care for the sports community. We bring research, design, production, and installation together under one roof so the entire project moves from the same plan.
